General Description
Discover a Remarkable New Way to Photograph Andean Waterbirds
Imagine photographing a bird as it glides across the water, capturing its perfect reflection, the delicate ripples surrounding it, and the soft golden light of the Andean sunrise.
Imagine positioning your camera almost at the bird’s eye level, creating breathtaking images with beautifully blurred backgrounds and an intimate perspective rarely achieved through traditional shoreline photography.
Welcome to the Huaypo Hydro Hide Photography Experience, a specialized private wildlife photography adventure designed to reveal the extraordinary beauty of Andean waterbirds from an entirely different perspective.
Our journey takes us to Huaypo Lake, a beautiful high-altitude wetland surrounded by mountains, agricultural landscapes, aquatic vegetation, and the spectacular scenery of the Peruvian Andes.
Here, we’ll explore the fascinating photographic possibilities offered by a floating photography system known as a Hydro Hide.
When properly authorized and operating conditions are safe, this specialized technique allows photographers to position their cameras remarkably close to the water’s surface, potentially creating striking images with natural reflections, soft backgrounds, environmental portraits, and authentic wildlife behavior.
Unlike conventional birdwatching from the shore, low-angle photography can dramatically change the visual relationship between the bird, the water, and the surrounding landscape.
Throughout the experience, a specialized nature photography guide, when confirmed as part of the booking, will provide technical guidance on composition, lighting, focusing techniques, bird behavior, and ethical wildlife photography.
You’ll have opportunities to learn how to photograph birds feeding, swimming, resting, grooming, interacting, and flying across the wetland.
The experience also includes opportunities to explore shoreline habitats, reed beds, and panoramic viewpoints, allowing you to capture the ecological richness and natural beauty of Huaypo.
This is more than a photography excursion.
It’s an opportunity to discover how changing your perspective can transform an ordinary wildlife encounter into a powerful visual story.
One lake. One unique perspective. A completely new way to experience wildlife photography.
Come to photograph the birds. Leave with a deeper understanding of the wetland.

DIA 1:
DIA 1:
5:00–5:30 AM – Private Hotel Pickup in Cusco
Your wildlife photography adventure begins before sunrise!
Our team will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco for an early morning journey toward Huaypo Lake.
There’s a special reason for our early departure: we want to take advantage of the first light of the day, when soft colors and morning bird activity may create exceptional photographic conditions.
During the drive, we’ll introduce you to the characteristics of the wetland and the photography opportunities it offers.
Your photography guide, if included in your confirmed package, will also explain the technical and safety considerations involved in this specialized experience.
6:30–7:00 AM – Arrival at Huaypo Lake
A breathtaking Andean photography location awaits.
Upon arrival, enjoy your first views of the lake, reed beds, and surrounding high-altitude landscapes.
Before beginning our photography sessions, we’ll conduct a detailed technical and safety briefing.

7:00–10:30 AM – Hydro Hide Experience: Water-Level Bird Photography
The main attraction: photographing birds from the perspective of the water!
This is the specialized activity that makes our expedition different from conventional bird photography tours.
When the necessary permissions have been obtained and conditions are safe, we’ll use the Hydro Hide in previously assessed areas, avoiding nesting sites, breeding areas, and sensitive concentrations of birds.
Positioning a camera close to the water’s surface can completely transform the appearance and storytelling potential of wildlife photographs.
Field Masterclass: Water-Level Photography

Learn the value of patience and observation in capturing authentic wildlife moments.
4. Birds in Flight
When conditions permit, practice tracking moving birds, using continuous autofocus, and selecting appropriate shutter speeds to capture movement.
5. Environmental Wildlife Portraits
Beyond close-up images, learn to create environmental portraits that place birds within their natural wetland habitat.
Incorporate water, aquatic vegetation, reflections, and atmospheric conditions into your compositions.
6. Ethical Wildlife Photography
Learn to recognize signs of stress or disturbance in birds and understand when to stop, move away, or change your photographic approach.
Responsible photography requires patience, appropriate distance, and respect for wildlife.
Important: If aquatic access is not authorized or conditions are unsafe, the Hydro Hide session will be replaced with specialized photography from approved land-based observation points. The confirmed tour format and any rescheduling conditions must be agreed upon before booking.
Target Bird Species at Huaypo Wetlands
Huaypo Lake and its surrounding habitats offer opportunities to search for different species of waterbirds, shorebirds, and marsh-associated birds.
Waterbirds and Lake Species
- Silvery Grebe (Podiceps occipitalis).
- White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia rolland).
- Giant Coot (Fulica gigantea).

Bird activity depends on seasonality, water levels, weather conditions, and natural behavior.
10:30–11:30 AM – Reed Beds & Marsh Bird Photography
From open water to the fascinating world of the reed beds.
After our first photography session, we’ll explore safe, authorized observation points near the lake’s aquatic vegetation.

We’ll continue our wildlife photography experience from designated land-based observation areas.
This second photographic approach complements low-angle imagery with broader environmental photographs that showcase birds within their natural Andean wetland habitat.
