General Description

2-Day Private Bird Photography & Wildlife Experience in Cusco, Peru

Pachacútec Bosque Andino · Sacred Garden · Huacarpay Wetlands

Discover the Extraordinary Birds of Cusco Through Your Camera Lens

Cusco is much more than Machu Picchu, ancient Inca temples, and spectacular mountain landscapes.

It’s also an exceptional destination for bird photography, where colorful hummingbirds, native flowers, restored Andean forests, and high-altitude wetlands create remarkable opportunities to document wildlife and biodiversity.

Welcome to the Cusco Bird Photography Expedition, an exclusive 2-day, 1-night private photography adventure designed for wildlife photographers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts.

This specialized experience takes you through three fascinating natural environments in the Cusco region, each offering unique opportunities to photograph birds, explore different habitats, and develop your photography skills.

Your adventure begins at Pachacútec Bosque Andino, an inspiring ecological restoration project in San Jerónimo, where native vegetation and flowering plants are helping create habitats for hummingbirds and other Andean birds.

Here, you’ll have opportunities to photograph remarkable species such as the Giant Hummingbird, Bearded Mountaineer, Sparkling Violetear, and other fascinating hummingbirds.

Continue to Sacred Garden, a peaceful setting surrounded by flowers and vegetation, where afternoon and early morning photography sessions offer opportunities to explore different lighting conditions and capture bird behavior.

An overnight stay allows you to experience the garden at two particularly rewarding times of day, without returning to Cusco between sessions.

On the second day, your journey continues to the Huacarpay Wetlands, where flowering gardens give way to beautiful lagoons, reed beds, aquatic birds, and expansive Andean landscapes.

Throughout the expedition, you’ll receive specialized photography guidance from Christian Quispe of Luz Natural Fotografía, subject to his confirmed availability.

Christian specializes in nature, bird, and wildlife photography, combining technical expertise with an appreciation for biodiversity and conservation.

You’ll explore techniques involving composition, natural lighting, autofocus, bird behavior, movement, environmental storytelling, and responsible wildlife photography.

Depending on availability and previously agreed conditions, participants may also have opportunities to use professional Nikon cameras and lenses.

This experience is not simply about capturing beautiful bird photographs.

It’s about learning to observe wildlife, understand the ecosystems that support it, and use photography to communicate the extraordinary natural heritage of the Peruvian Andes.

Three natural habitats. Two days of exploration. One extraordinary journey through photography and conservation.

Come to photograph the birds. Leave with stories worth conserving.

The Art of Photographing Wildlife Among Flowers and Forests

8:00 AM – Private Hotel Pickup in Cusco

Your Andean photography adventure begins!

Our team will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco to begin a private expedition dedicated to discovering and photographing the remarkable birds of the Peruvian Andes.

We’ll travel toward San Jerónimo and the Wanakauri micro-watershed, where our first bird photography experience awaits.

During the journey, your photography guide will introduce the expedition’s objectives, the techniques we’ll practice, and the essential principles of ethical wildlife photography.

8:30–9:00 AM – Arrival & Introduction to Pachacútec Bosque Andino

Welcome to an Andean forest coming back to life.

Our first destination is Pachacútec Bosque Andino, an ecological restoration project located in San Jerónimo, Cusco.

Discover how recovering native vegetation, establishing nectar-producing plants, and protecting soil and water resources can provide valuable habitats and food resources for hummingbirds and other birds.

Before beginning our photography sessions, we’ll review equipment use, trail safety, and wildlife observation guidelines.

9:00–11:15 AM – Hummingbird & Andean Bird Photography

  • Bearded Mountaineer.
  • Sparkling Violetear.
  • Black-tailed Trainbearer.
  • Green-tailed Trainbearer.
  • Tyrian Metaltail.

Additional bird species may be encountered depending on their natural presence and activity.

Field Masterclass: Hummingbird Photography

With guidance from Christian Quispe, when his participation is confirmed, you’ll practice:

  • Bird identification and behavioral observation.
  • Selecting natural backgrounds and effective compositions.
  • Understanding light and exposure.
  • Choosing shutter speeds to freeze motion.
  • Continuous autofocus and subject tracking.
  • Photographing perched and flying birds.
  • Capturing natural interactions between hummingbirds and flowers.
  • Maintaining appropriate working distances and practicing ethical photography.

The goal is not only to create beautiful photographs, but also to develop the patience and observation skills needed to anticipate natural wildlife moments without disturbing the birds.

11:15 AM–12:00 PM – Native Flowers, Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration

Every flower tells a story. Every photograph can help share it.

We’ll shift our attention to native flowering plants and their ecological relationships with pollinators.

Discover how flowers provide food resources for hummingbirds and how restoring vegetation helps support the delicate ecological connections within an Andean forest.

This session focuses on close-up photography, environmental composition, and visual storytelling.

Learn how flowers, vegetation, and natural landscapes can become essential elements in photographs that communicate conservation messages.

12:00–1:30 PM – Scenic Transfer to Sacred Garden

We’ll continue our private journey toward San Salvador, enjoying beautiful Andean scenery along the way.

This is also an opportunity to discuss the photographs taken during the morning and prepare for our next session.

1:30–2:00 PM – Arrival & Check-in at Sacred Garden

Welcome to our second bird photography destination.

Upon arrival at Sacred Garden, we’ll check in and settle into our planned accommodation, subject to final confirmation.

A new setting for discovering the beauty of hummingbirds.

Our second major photography experience takes place in the gardens and designated observation areas of Sacred Garden.

We’ll leave the hummingbird gardens behind and travel toward the Southern Valley of Cusco.

The landscape changes dramatically as flowering gardens and mountain vegetation give way to lagoons, wetlands, reed beds, and open natural areas.

This new environment presents opportunities to explore different wildlife photography techniques and compositions.

Transfer times are approximate and depend on the route, traffic, and road conditions.

11:00 AM–1:00 PM – Huacarpay Wetland Bird Photography

During the drive, we’ll have time to review favorite photographs, share wildlife observations, and discuss the techniques practiced over the two days.

3:00 PM – Estimated Hotel Drop-off in Cusco

Our expedition concludes with transportation back to your hotel in Cusco.

You’ll return with new photography skills, memorable wildlife experiences, and a deeper understanding of Andean biodiversity.
